Ethics vs Morality
What is the difference between Ethics and Morality?
Ethics comes from the Greek word ta ethicka (having to do
with good character)
· it is interested more in the good that humans tend
toward, such as happiness and freedom
· guides morality; gives vision to our action
· it is like understanding musical theory, knowing how
to read music, and understanding technique
· ethics is like understanding the laws of physics which
govern driving a car
Morality comes from the latin word moralitias (having to go with the customs, habits, and manners shaping human life)
· it is more interested in the ways that humans can attain this good, such as rules, laws and commandments which we experience as a duty or obligation to follow
· it is like actually playing music, hitting the right notes, correctly interpreting the musical phrase, performing
· morality is like good driving
How are they related
Morality – A person’s morality consists of a set of values and principles that guide his or her choices and guide determines what kind of person he/she is
becoming. Everyone has a morality. Moralities differ between individuals, and each individual’s morality changes as he or she grows from one stage of life to the next.
Cultures too have their own moralities. We need to be critical of the moral values we find in the society around us.

Philosophy
Today we took a note on Morals and Ethics. Students were given a handout on Aristotle and Kant and asked to use their textbooks to fill in the blanks.
We then examined the idea of a moral operating system and asked ourselves, "Are we following in Jesus' footsteps... are we really treating people the way we would like to be treated"
To help us examine this we watched a TED Talk given by Damon Horowitz " Calls for a "moral operating system"" See Below:

Examining the Philosophers
Today we took a closer look at 3 Philosophers KANT, ARISTOTLE and LEVINAS. Below is a brief powerpoint about each one as well as the handout that was given out in class.
Your assignments today is to find a Newspaper article that deals with an Ethical Issue and describe how each philosopher would see/deal with the issue. See Assignment Below.

Touching The Void Assignment
Please See Assignment below as well as Rubric.
"Touching the Void" Gaspar Noé, Lucile Hadzihalilovic
Today we will begin by signing up for our morning prayer. Each student will lead us through prayer every Friday before our Restorative Circle. We also brainstormed ideas as to Restorative Circle ideas.
The students then began watching a portion of the video "Touching the Void" This story is about two mountain climbers who are faced with some very ethical questions. The students will be asked to examine the choices of the mountain climbers from the different philosophical stand points.
